Coastal areas provide us with some of the most nutritious and tasty food on earth. Join us in the pristine San Juan Islands of Washington state to learn about the bounties the sea can provide. We will explore the intertidal zone and beyond, learning to identify, harvest, preserve, and prepare local seaweeds and land plants. We will also be teaching sustainable harvesting techniques and sampling exciting new recipes. Join us in leisurely exploring the beaches by foot during low tide, as well as kayaking the calm bays while harvesting local sea vegetables. Enhance your health and plant knowledge while dining on wonderful coastal cuisine and basking in the beauty of the islands. Students will return home with the seaweeds they have preserved in class, including the famous Earthwalk Northwest bullwhip kelp dill pickles.
