This ancient art of forming birch containers comes to us from centuries of tradition. These vessels exquisitely merge necessity with beauty and have survived through untold generations. The Makak is made from a single sheet of bark which is cut, folded, and stitched using an awl with root lacing.  A rim is added to support the opening and then lashed in place with strong yet decorative stitches.  A well-made makak was waterproof, and often used to store foods such as maple sugar or may have even been used as a cooking vessel. We will explore these traditions of old by creating these beautiful and useful containers. These vessels will measure about 5 x 7 x 5 1/2 inches.
